Cherry, Tyson and Tyra

It is with great pleasure that I write this blog entry about how we at Pet Owners and Animal Lovers failed at getting these three dogs adopted into new homes.
Why happy u ask? Read on...

This post is to urge all the owners to think twice before giving up their pets.

The examples here are of three very loving and adorable dogs - Cherry, Tyson and Tyra.
All the three dogs belong to genuine and loving families. All the three families love their pets very dearly and the decision to put their pets up for adoption was a very hard one for them.
I normally have a long chat with the family and see how genuine the people and the reasons are for giving up their pet are and if they are willing to try, we go to their place and try to see what makes them think of giving up their own kid in the first place. If it is something which they and we are just not able to deal with at all, we start the process of re homing.

Cherry Adhyapak

A beautiful lady labrador. 2 years of age now. She simply loves and adores her family. She is very active and very good with children as well.
We made a few observations the first time we visited her -
She was very attached to the children and the children to her.
She believes that it is her duty to guard and protect the family from everybody and everything else in the world.
She hates to stay alone, even for a few minutes.
She is super active inspite of her walks and exercise.
In a way, she believed she was the Alpha in the family and that she ruled the house and the owners. It was her responsibility to protect them. Same as a king would do for his beloved subjects. She believed that she was the pack leader.

We worked on these things with her and her family. We advised the family to change the way they did things. The Adhyapaks were very accomodating and listened to every word we said and without the normal apprehensions or arrogance that people show looking at our age and experience, they followed everything.
We got positive reports from them very soon!

*Cherry went to her new home and came back the very next day. The Adhyapaks have decided that they will never ever let go of their little girl ever again!

Tyson

A beautiful 1 year old dalmation fellow. As the breed goes, he is super active and wants to play a lot all the time. The owners felt that their home was small for this active dog. Listening to the families predicament, we decided to step in and help out. We mediated the adoption. Tyson was taken to his new homes, a huge farmhouse with ducks, goats and many other things to chase around.
However, in one night, the family realised the grave mistake they had made. They realised that they would never be able to live without their boy Tyson. Within 12 hours, they were back at the farmhouse to pick him up and take him back home!

We advised them on how they could adequately exercise Tyson and hence bring about some kind of discipline in their lives together.

Tyra Amar

Tyra is a one of a kind rottweiler. The one who has grown up and lived most of her life with cats. She is unlike other rotts and is more like a labrador. The Amar family called us and we mediated her adoption. After a few weeks, the new family sent Tyra back for a few days saying that they had to go somewhere. Once, Tyra was back with them, the Amar family knew that Tyra was meant to be with them and not with anyone else. They have now decided to keep her permanently. A happy ending for all the Amars.

A dog - master relationship is a very special one.
Not easy for either of the sides to let go easily once it has been established.

A few thoughts on establishing the right king of dog - master relationship -

The first thing a dog has to understand is that, it has a master.
Once the master and dog relationship has been established, a lot of things become easy. The dog tends to start looking towards the master as a leader and this helps establish boundaries without taking much trouble.

However, the needs of each dog will vary and the techniques you use to establish this relationship are not the same for every dog. Each one has its own personality, characteristics and traits. Understanding and adjusting your methods as per the dogs needs and behaviour is the first and the most important thing we need to do. Please do not expect the dog to adjust to your needs and characteristics right away.
However, I have noticed that once you have successfully established the master - dog relationship, the dog begins to understand you much more than before. A new passage of communication opens up!

Small things like feeding and walking the dog yourself, not allowing them to jump up and down and all over you and telling them that when you sit at a place, that place is yours and not theirs can be a good start to a good relationship.

Ceaser Milan always says that the Walk is a very important activity in a dog's daily routine. And the person who is the master performing this activity daily with the dog gives the dog and the master both a better understanding of each other.

A tired dog is a good dog is another thing he says. Tire your dog everyday with a good amount of exercise. Half your worries will be over. The dog will automatically start listening to you once it is tired.

If your dog is fat, you are fat too! Get out there are go for the walk with your dog.

If you have a dog walker / trainer, there are chances that the dog respects and obeys your walker / trainer more than it respects and obeys you.
And why shouldn't he respect them more?
The dog walker has earned that respect in the dog's eyes. The dog walker spends time with the dog everyday. The walker has proved that he can protect the dog from other animals, hence establishing that he is at a superior position as compared to the dog. Offering protection is definitely a sign of magnanimity and leadership, isn't it?
Also, they share smells, see new scenery and all of that together. The dog feels safe and has a leader and feels that he is part of a pack.

Dogs love to be a part of a pack, probably because they are descendants of wolves and wolves live and hunt in packs.
Watch the movies '8 below' and 'Alpha and Omega' to understand more about pack behaviour in dogs.

Once you are the pack leader, you automatically are your dog's hero and he / she will respect you no matter what.

Don't you want to be your dog's hero?? Why let your walker or trainer take that position?
Make time for your pet everyday. Enjoy things together while being firm at the same time. Everybody will be at peace then - you, your family and most importantly your dog.

Dog rescued from drunkard's house in Naupada

November 6th, 2012

PAL, along with Thane SPCA and Sadbhavana Charitable Trust rescued a dog from a drunkard. He had thrown the dog once from the second floor of the building.

The police was involved and we took the culprit to the Naupada Police Station. The culprit was let go after a warning and the dog was confiscated.

The laws under which animals of India are protected are as follows -

IPC 428
IPC 429
Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act of 1960
Wildlife Act

Please refer to these sections and make sure that a culprit gets punished if you spot an act of cruelty against any animal, bird, reptile.

Awareness Program at Father Agnel School Vashi

Recently, we had an awareness program in Father Agnel School, Vashi.

This was arranged by some of the MBA students of Father Agnel college as they felt that it was very necessary that the children understand animals.

They approached us and we were only too happy to go to the school and have a program with the kids.

The awareness campaign was on Nov 10th.

There were students from Std 6th to the Std 10th.

The students really enjoyed the session and many of them told us that they would never be scared of animals ever again.

It was really good to hear that the children had benefited from the program.

Waghya

This post is in memory of Waghya, the Tandoor house dog in Vartak Nagar.

Waghya passed away on 26th November 2012. He was 9 years old.

He lived a very happy and good life.

He was run over for the fourth time and this time he could not take it.

The Life of PI

He was lost, he was lonely, scared and felt abandoned by not just his family, but by the whole world. All he could do was wail and hope against hope that someone would come to save him somehow. He had no paper and pen to keep track of time and he did not have a Richard Parker to keep him company either. The days and nights just seemed to come and go. Dec 3rd, 2012 - Somewhere in the late evening, one watchman decided that he should do something about the wailing which he was hearing for the past few days.He informed a gentleman, who feed dogs in the surrounding area. Mr Kanchan then sort help and started calling various people. Mr Dighe, then informed us about this. We went in the night once to take a look at the area. It was so dark that we could barely see the edge of the drainage. Having rescued Bane before, we hoped that the situation would be better in the morning and that maybe with sunlight and some help things would work out for PI. Dec 4th, 2012 - We assembled at the point trying to spot Pi. A lot of the Nala was covered and the end of it was not to be seen! We followed the Huge Drain and soon realised that one of the societies had built a garden over a part of the drain and the rest of it was under a huge, wide, recently tarred road. We found the part of the drain where it opens out into a nala again and we heard a wail. We stopped in our tracks and listened hard. On following the sound, we soon realised that it was coming from a part of the Nala which was under the garden. We called out to Pi. He was too scared, confused and disillusioned to realise that we were there to help him. He stopped wailing on realising that we had heard him. He started to move in the opposite direction.

Cut to scene 2 -

The fire brigade and the TMC van arrive. The TMC dog catchers gladly offered to help as they were around in the Lok Upvan area. The firemen saw us fretting and worried and asked us if Pi belonged to any one of us. He was ours, yes - yours and mine. Every citizen of India owned Pi. He was the dog of the Public. He was indeed ours. The firemen soon started planning and strategising. They gladly took all our inputs too. Some of them got down from one side of the Nala and the others at the end which was open after the garden and the Road. Within seconds, Pi realised that something was up and decided to run from the open side towards where he first fell into the drain.

The Firemen and the TMC catchers entering the Nala

The TMC dog catchers courageously entered the huge Nala as well, along with Dr Hemant, ready to sedate the dog as soon as he catches it.

Dr Hemant Thange and the TMC catcher who caught PI

The doc had warned everybody around to avoid eye contact when Pi came along. Pi was nervous and scared. He knew the people were upto somethng. He decided to make a run for it.

And lo behold, the very skilled TMC dog catcher caught him in his noose. He was sedated and he calmed down. He saw stars in circles and he felt a calm come over him.

He closed his eyes. Pi is very weak and has been taken to the TMC sterlisation center for the time being. He will be given the required treatment there and once he is fit, he will be operated. He needs your prayers to get better. Do go and visit him in the Wagle Estate Center, near Ashar IT PArk, and if you do go, please take some good, nutritious food for him. Pi needs your prayers, love and care. With Roshni Saini,Kaur aunty, Nolin Chitnis, Hemant Pradip Thange
